Tips for Planning Your Career in Computer Game Design

Dreaming of becoming a game designer? You can make your dream come true with education and experience. Computer game design can be an enjoyable, lucrative and fulfilling career for gaming enthusiasts. Those aspiring to become a video game designer or computer game developer should first and foremost have an unquenchable interest in the games. A developer spends countless hours in front of their computer screen and gaming console, designing aspects of the game and repairing glitches and errors. While this can become tiresome, for many game lovers it is the perfect career.


To find out whether or not a career as a game developer is is to work as a tester first. This will get your feet wet and introduce you to some of the duties related to video and computer game development and design. Beta testers try the games for free to check for errors and bugs, and usually do not get paid. At the big video game companies, testers often work on the job site during traditional working hours. The job is often tedious and many testers clock lots of overtime.

After if you have worked as a tester and really enjoyed it, the next logical step for you may be to pursue a career in design. You should possess a passion for art, storytelling, computers and electronics because all of these aspects come together to create an entertaining computer or video game. If this sounds like you, the next step is to obtain the proper education. Look around to find a good technology school that offers a video game design program or related program. A few schools to consider are the various Art Institutes around the country, ITT Tech and DeVry Technical College which also have various locations. These schools can give you the education you need to break into the world of game design and development.

To be a computer game designer can be a fantastic career for the right person. If you are dedicated enough to get the education and training you need, and pursue your dreams with determination, you can become a successful designer. As you work your way up the ladder, you will find higher pay and more opportunities. There are jobs out there for talented, educated and experienced designers who are looking for a full-time career with the possibility of advancement. If you've been out of school for awhile it can be a long, tough road but one worth pursuing if you want an exiting new career.
